A Trip to the Mountains – O Călătorie la Munte

The weekend had finally arrived, and the family was ready for their long-planned trip to the mountains. Father packed the car while mother checked the map on her phone. Their children, eight-year-old Ana and ten-year-old Mihai, were already fighting about who would sit in the front seat.
Weekend-ul a sosit în sfârșit, iar familia era pregătită pentru călătoria lor mult planificată la munte. Tatăl a umplut mașina, iar mama verifica harta pe telefon. Copiii lor, Ana de opt ani și Mihai de zece ani, deja se certau despre cine va sta pe scaunul din față.
Good morning, everyone! Is everyone ready? asked the father, closing the boot of the car. The children ran out of the house with their small backpacks. Mother brought a large cooler bag with drinks and sandwiches for the journey.
Bună dimineața, tuturor! Sunt toți gata? a întrebat tatăl, închizând portbagajul mașinii. Copiii au alergat din casă cu rucsacurile lor mici. Mama a adus o geantă termo mare cu băuturi și sandviciuri pentru drum.
Are we there yet? asked Ana after only ten minutes in the car. Mother smiled and said, We have been driving for ten minutes, sweetheart. The mountains are four hours away. Mihai started counting the cows he could see through the window to keep himself busy.
Am ajuns? a întrebat Ana după doar zece minute de mers cu mașina. Mama a zâmbit și a spus: Mergem de zece minute, dragă. Muntele este la patru ore distanță. Mihai a început să numere vacile pe care le putea vedea prin geam pentru a se distra.
They stopped at a motorway service station after two hours. Mihai wanted to buy a chocolate bar, and Ana asked for a bottle of orange juice. Father bought himself a coffee while mother stretched her legs. Everybody was happy to move their bodies after sitting for so long.

When they finally arrived in the mountain village, the view was beautiful. Green hills stretched as far as the eye could see, and a small river ran through the town. The family checked into their hotel, a traditional wooden building with a red roof.
Când au ajuns în sfârșit în satul de munte, priveliștea era frumoasă. Dealuri verzi se întindeau cât vezi cu ochii, iar un mic râu traversa satul. Familia s-a cazat la hotel, o clădire tradițională din lemn cu acoperiș roșu.
After a short break in their room, they went to explore the town. The main street had many small shops selling local products. Mother was immediately attracted to a shop with handmade wool sweaters. Father and the children preferred to look at the souvenirs outside.
După o scurtă pauză în cameră, au ieșit să exploreze satul. Strada principală avea multe magazine mici care vindeau produse locale. Mama a fost atrasă imediat de un magazin cu pulovere din lână făcute manual. Tatăl și copiii au preferat să se uite la suveniruri afară.
Excuse me, how much is this sweater? asked the mother in her best Romanian. The shopkeeper smiled and said, That one is three hundred lei, madam. It is made of pure mountain wool. The mother thought about it for a moment, but in the end she decided to buy it. It was a special treat for herself.
Scuzați-mă, cât costă acest pulover? a întrebat mama în româna ei cea mai bună. Vânzătoarea a zâmbit și a spus: Acesta costă trei sute de lei, doamnă. Este făcut din lână pură de munte. Mama s-a gândit o clipă, dar în cele din urmă a decis să-l cumpere. A fost un cadou special pentru ea.
Later, they walked to the local supermarket to buy food for their picnics. Mihai helped his father choose fresh fruits. Ana found a box of strawberry yoghourt that she really wanted. Father also bought some cheese, bread, and cold cuts for a simple dinner.
Mai târziu, au mers la supermarketul local pentru a cumpăra mâncare pentru picnicuri. Mihai l-a ajutat pe tatăl să aleagă fructe proaspete. Ana a găsit o cutie de iaurt cu căpșuni pe care și-l dorea foarte mult. Tatăl a cumpărat și brânză, pâine și mezeluri pentru o cină simplă.
In the afternoon, the family went to play mini golf near the river. The course had eighteen holes and beautiful wooden decorations. Mihai was very good at it and finished with only thirty-two strokes. Ana needed forty-five, but she had a lot of fun trying to get the ball into the small holes.
După-amiaza, familia a mers să joace minigolf lângă râu. Terenul avea optsprezece găuri și decorațiuni frumoase din lemn. Mihai era foarte bun la asta și a terminat cu doar treizeci și două lovituri. Ana a avut nevoie de patruzeci și cinci, dar s-a distrat foarte mult încercând să bage mingea în găurile mici.
That was amazing, Dad! said Mihai. I beat my personal record! Father was proud of his son. Well done, champion! he said, giving him a high five. Even mother tried a few holes, but she was not as talented as her children.
Asta a fost incredibil, tată! a spus Mihai. Mi-am bătut recordul personal! Tatăl era mândru de fiul lui. Bine făcut, campion! a spus el, dându-i un high five. Chiar și mama a încercat câteva găuri, dar nu era la fel de talentată ca copiii ei.
For dinner, they decided to try the traditional restaurant that their hotel receptionist had recommended. It was called La Bunicu, which means At Grandfather's in English. The building was very old, with thick stone walls and a large fireplace.
Pentru cină, au decis să încerce restaurantul tradițional pe care receptionistul hotelului lor îl recomandase. Se numea La Bunicu. Clădirea era foarte veche, cu pereți groși de piatră și un șemineu mare.
Good evening. Do you have a table for four? asked the mother when they entered. The waiter nodded and led them to a table near the window. The children were excited to see the menu, which had pictures of all the dishes.
Bună seara. Aveți o masă pentru patru persoane? a întrebat mama când au intrat. Ospătarul a dat din cap și i-a condus la o masă lângă geam. Copiii erau entuziasmați să vadă meniul, care avea poze cu toate preparatele.
I would like the trout with potatoes, please, said Mihai. And I will have the mushroom soup to start, added the mother. Father ordered the pork knuckle with sauerkraut, which the waiter highly recommended. Ana, being a vegetarian, chose the potato pancakes with mushrooms.
Aș dori păstrăvul cu cartofi, vă rog, a spus Mihai. Și voi începe cu supa de ciuperci, a adăugat mama. Tatăl a comandat cotletul de porc cu varză acră, pe care ospătarul l-a recomandat cu tărie. Ana, fiind vegetariană, a ales clătitele de cartofi cu ciuperci.
The food arrived after about twenty minutes. Everything smelled wonderful. The portions were large and filling. Mihai immediately started eating his fish, which was perfectly grilled. The mother enjoyed her soup, which was creamy and full of forest mushrooms.
Mâncarea a sosit după aproximativ douăzeci de minute. Totul mirosea minunat. Porțiile erau mari și hrănitoare. Mihai a început imediat să mănânce peștele lui, care era perfect grătar. Mama s-a bucurat de supa ei, care era cremoasă și plină de ciuperci de pădure.
This is the best dinner of the whole year! said Ana with her mouth full. Her father laughed and reminded her to eat properly. Mother cut her pork knuckle, which was so tender it fell off the bone. They all agreed that the food was exceptional.

Excuse me, could we have the bill, please? asked the father when they finished eating. The waiter brought a small wooden board with the bill in a leather folder. The total was one hundred and eighty lei, which they thought was reasonable for such a good meal.

Thank you for a wonderful evening, said the mother to the waiter as they were leaving. It was their best dinner in a long time. The waiter smiled and said, We hope to see you again. The mountains are beautiful in every season.

On the way back to the hotel, the children were very tired but very happy. They talked about their favourite parts of the day. Mihai liked the mini golf best. Ana said the dinner was better than anything she had ever eaten. The parents were happy that the children had enjoyed the trip so much.

This is exactly what we needed, she said. The father nodded and turned off the lights. Tomorrow would bring new adventures in the beautiful mountains.

As they slept, the mountain wind gently blew through the trees outside. The river continued to flow peacefully through the valley. And somewhere in the distance, a mountain owl called into the quiet night. The family was resting well, dreaming of all the fun they would have in the days to come.
În timp ce dormeau, vântul muntelui bătea ușor prin copacii de afară. Râul continua să curgă pașnic prin vale. Și undeva în depărtare, o bufniță de munte striga în noaptea liniștită. Familia se odihnea bine, visând la toată distracția pe care o vor avea în zilele următoare.
The next morning, the sun rose over the mountain peaks, painting them golden. Birds sang in the garden of the hotel. It was going to be another beautiful day in the mountains, and the family could not wait to begin their new adventure.

Are you awake? called the mother from the kitchen, where she was preparing breakfast. The smell of fresh coffee and warm bread filled the hotel room. Mihai was the first to jump out of bed. His sister Ana followed a few minutes later, rubbing her eyes and still wearing her pyjamas.

Good morning, sleepyheads! said the father, who was already dressed and ready for the day. Did you sleep well? The children nodded and ran to the window to look at the mountains. The peaks were still covered with a little snow from the night before, which made them look even more beautiful.

Look, Mum! shouted Ana. There is a squirrel! A small red squirrel was sitting on a branch, looking at them with curious eyes. Mihai tried to take a photo with his phone, but the squirrel ran away before he could press the button. They all laughed and continued their walk.

After two hours of walking, they reached a small mountain hut where they could rest and buy refreshments. The hut was made of wood and had a terrace with wonderful views of the valley below. They ordered lemonade and apple strudel, which was freshly baked by the old lady who owned the hut.

This is the life, said the father, sitting comfortably on the wooden bench. The children ran around on the grass while the mother took photos of the beautiful scenery. A light wind was blowing from the mountains, making the warm afternoon even more pleasant.

As they fell asleep that night, the family knew that they had created wonderful memories that would last a lifetime. The mountains had given them peace, adventure, and most importantly, quality time together as a family. They were already planning to come back next year, perhaps for a longer stay.
